It seemed as though Chloe was not willing to give Lily any further time as the police officer continued making the rounds, meaning that Lily was left to her own devices. After having been involved in multiple criminal cases she didn’t feel as though she could just go back to Starling Cottage and get on with her life. She wanted to be involved, especially if there was something nefarious going on. From what happened last night Chloe seemed to think that this was an accident, and Lily doubted that anything she had heard so far had changed her mind. But there was still the husband to speak to. Lily was following Chloe’s lead, which was a little awkward, but she hoped that she could find something that Chloe had missed, and in this way she could insure that Constable Dudley would return to his rightful place as the protector of this village.

Heath was standing on the porch, as he had been for a lot of the time last night. He was impressively tall, and as he stared out at the sea there was a pensive air to him. his face was like stone, and as with Cecilia there were shadows under his eyes.

“Excuse me Heath, do you mind if I have a word with you?” Lily asked.

Heath turned, startled, for he had been lost in his own thoughts. “I don’t mind Lily, it’s better than standing here and staring out at the ocean,” he said.

“Yes, well, I don’t mean to pry, but I was wondering if I could ask you a little bit about what happened last night,” she began.

“I just told the constable, so I suppose there’s no harm in going over it again. Just as long as you change my name when you write the book,” he said with a knowing smile. There was a kind of effortless charm with him that Lily sensed was dangerous. It was the same kind of thing that Blake had, and she wondered if it was a product of wealth or just something that handsome English men possessed.

“I promise,” Lily said with a smile. “I hope this isn’t too personal, but is everything alright with you and Cecilia? It’s just that I noticed you and she reacted to things in a very different manner.”

A slight coldness appeared in his eyes. “We always have,” he said. “When something happens I prefer doing something about it. She gets overwhelmed easily.”

“I’m just a little surprised that you’re not with her, comforting her.”

Heath hung his head. Perhaps he hadn’t expected her to get so personal so quickly. “Sometimes it’s just hard to be around her when she’s like this. I can’t do anything to fix it, you know? And it makes me feel worse. But Cecilia… I love her, but she never does herself any favors. She always lets herself fall into despair.”

“Is that what your argument was about?”

“No, no I’ve long given up trying to change that about her. We were arguing about her brother, my brother-in-law.
